This presentation outlines the pros and cons of shared hosting vs cloud hosting, and how to build a roll-your-own cloud host, complete with a clean, fast, free open source control panel. An introduction to Free Open Source Software, a review of the hundreds of FOSS products you get with a standard web hosting package, and some practical ideas for cost reduction and new business development using FOSS systems. Presented for the Maroondah Business Association on 7 May 2014.

A showcase, evaluation and demo of the free open source concrete5 content management system. Presented for the Free Open Source Business Apps group on 14 Nov 2013.

VirtueMart 2.0 workshop

This presentation walks through the the process of building a Virtuemart 2 online shop, and VirtueMart's features set, strengths and weaknesses. It was updated for the Free Open Source Business Apps group on 10 Oct 2013. The original version of the presentation was delivered to the Melbourne Joomla! User Group on 25 July 2012.

An evaluation and demo of the ProjectFork 4.1 project management system and its integration with the Joomla! 3.x UI. Presented for the Melbourne Joomla! User Group on 27 March 2013.

This presentation is an expansion and elaboration of my talk on ChronoForms web application development from Jan 2011. Presented at Melbourne Joomla!Day on 19 Jan 2013.

A practical, common-sense process for building and running a successful web development business. Presented at Melbourne Joomla!Day on 20 Jan 2013.

ChronoForms workflow application

This presentation described requirements definition, data modelling and solution design for a work flow system developed with ChronoForms v4 on  Joomla! 1.7. It was presented for the Melbourne Joomla! User Group on 25 Jan 2012. The presentation included a couple of demonstations: one on building a basic form in ChronoForms, and a detailed demo of the finished solution.

Web design patterns

This presentation provided context and a tour of a large number of solution design patterns commonly found in web development. It was delivered to the Melbourne PHP User Group on 20 Sept 2010, as a follow-on to another presentation introducing the Gang of Four (GoF) design patterns.

PHP developer toolbox

This presentation included feature summaries and highlights, and demos of a set of developer tools to support full-service PHP web development work, on a budget. It was delivered to the Melbourne PHP User Group on 15 March 2010. I’ve updated my toolbox since then, and the tools have also improved significantly, so I updated this presentation for the Melbourne Joomla! User Group in Feb 2012.

Adapter design pattern

This was a straightforward presentation of the GoF Adapter design pattern to the Melbourne Patterns Group on 6 May 2009. The presentation included a Java example and a discussion.
